34 PGA tour winners are here and getting ready to play at Kapalua's Plantation Course this weekend, Jan. 9-12th, 2015. It's cool for us because we volunteer for the ShotLink team as Fairway Laser operators on hole #13. It's a little work for a lot of fun/excitement being inside the ropes and getting to see these guys hit there 2nd and sometimes 3rd shots to a difficult elevated green.
If want to watch it will be televised on the Golf Channel; for you mainlanders it will be on in prime time @ Golf Channel 8 p.m. ET – 9:30 p.m. ET and 11:30 p.m. – 1 a.m. ET. With winter upon you it is fun to sit down and watch what's going on in Maui as they often break away to shots of Humpback Whale's breaching, surfer's, etc... ![]() Aloha, Our first Whale sighting happened on a trip with Trilogy's Blue'aina on 12/7/14. The first sighting was just a blow on the way to Lanai, but sometimes that's all you see. On the way back from Lanai we spotted a boat that had zoomed by us had stopped; that is an indicator that a whale is in the area. Sure enough Captain Katy turned towards that boat and then all of sudden the whale was underneath us. Whoa, boat stopped and then we were "mugged" by a Humpback yearling. It swam under and around us for a good 10 minutes or so and then swam away. Way cool, as that is our first encounter with a yearling as well. Mom had probably weaned it and brought it back to Maui, it's birth spot last year, and said Aloha and have a good life. Then yesterday, 12/8/14, at sunset, we spotted our first whales from our condo. We are now set and happy. Yay!
Queens Treasure reported that yesterday they saw their first whale 3 miles south of Mala wharf. Yay. We haven't seen our first whale as of yet, but have been watching and telling folks to keep an eye out for them.
Here is the order of arrival as stated by Hawaiian Humpback Whale research:
So far the sightings have been singular whales which would follow as if a female brings along a yearling they soon part upon arrival and/or they have the been sub-adults I suspect. The first confirmed sighting of a humpback whale on Monday, September 15th, 2014 in waters off of Kauai marks the beginning of whale season in Hawai‘i. Ocean recreation tour company Holo Holo Charters observed a humpback whale surfacing approximately one mile off the Kekaha Sugar Mill on the west side of Kauai.
As of late these whales are showing up earlier, on average, then just 5 years ago. Looking back to to 1998 (17 years of data) the first whale sighting has shortened from October 6th down to September 25th for the last 5 years. This is exciting for locals residents and researchers I'm sure. ![]() No whales spotted in Kahana as of yet, but it seems we see a pod of Spinner Dolphins cruise by here heading South often. Not every day but in the last week we saw them 3 times and always between 9 and 10 am. Don't know if that is their pattern of activity or a mere coincidence? I will have to investigate. Aloha,
FIrst official Humpback Whale sighting this season was October 6, 2013 a couple of miles off of Molokini, Yay! We have been watching a little more intensely for whales from our lanai and have noticed that a pod(s) of Spinner Dolphins have been coming by (Kahana beach) in the mornings this week. Saw them on Monday heading South about 9am and on Wednesday; our neighbor said she saw them heading north about 7am-ish on Wednesday. Pattern? Maui voted best island in the world by Conde Nast Travel magazine readers again. Want to come visit Maui? We can help you find that perfect condo and help select those exciting activities...
